Silver and Blue Tiara
I have a fascination with crowns. Vintage crown pins, vintage rhinestone tiaras, really anything pretty and sparkly that one wears on ones head. I’ve lately had this urge to make crowns. Apparently back “in the olden days”, crowns and tiaras were an important part of fancy and formal party wear. Maybe I was born in the wrong era? Anyway, why the heck should beauty queens have all the fun? Why can’t I wear a crown while I surf the internet? Who says I can’t feel pretty and royal while I mop the floor? (ok,, that is a just for instance, i rarely mop the floor…. maybe that makes it an important occasion?)
While I was weaving this tiara together, I realized that this seemed familiar to me. Not the first time I’ve made a fancy headpiece. Waaaay back in 1987, I made my own wedding tiara. We were poor college students and I remember looking at wedding veils in the wedding shop and thinking that they looked 1.) overpriced and 2.) easy to make. So I went to fabric store and purchased silk flowers, veil material, wire and pearls and made my own. Nothing too fancy or elaborate, because I couldn’t afford expensive trims and flowers. But I remember being pleased with myself that I had saved money and rather odd because back in the 80s if you weren’t spending wads of cash on stuff, you just weren’t living. Soooo….
Back to today. I’ve made 6 crowns/tiaras so far. I’m going to try to spread the message, crowns aren’t just for beauty queens, and maybe there are others out there who have the same fascination with crowns that I have?
